Tech Theatre

Technical Theatre I is a one-semester course. It is an overview of all the technical elements involved in producing a show. This course will cover the history of theatre, the design process, safety, tools of the industry, materials, scenic construction, scenic art, rigging and knots, lighting and electrics, costumes, props, makeup and wigs, and sound. Participation is a large part of student success in this course. During the semester, students will work on TVS productions during class and are strongly encouraged to volunteer for after-school work calls. Class is limited to 8 students per semester and meets daily in the Black Box Theater.

Technical Theatre II is a one-semester course. Class size is limited. The course offers an in-depth look at script analysis as it pertains to the technical elements of a production. Students are required to submit projects during the semester related to each of these elements. Publicity and poster design will also be taught. The course will culminate with students’ applying basic design and production concepts learned in class to a TVS production.

The course will build on the knowledge and skills gained in Technical Theatre II. In this course, students will investigate several areas of production and design from both practical and theoretical bases. Production management and leadership will be a topic woven through the year. We will examine in greater depth the computerized, electrical, and mechanical systems in the theatre and scene shop, as well as the many different crew positions associated with a theatrical production. A student who successfully completes Tech Theatre III & IV will be able to operate all the systems that make up the SST/ BBT. Much of the course will be self-paced and will require a great deal of motivation. Much of the class will be conducted as a laboratory setting, giving students the opportunity to employ the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. Demonstrations and discussion will be an essential part of the class, making student participation very important. Active, consistent participation will be crucial to the success of each student, as well as the program.

nnovation in Technical Theatre is a continuation of Technical Theatre. Students will explore standard theatrical communication protocols, rigging and applied mathematics, 2D/ 3D Drafting, and will complete a comprehensive, individual design project each semester. Students will participate on class crews and are encouraged to participate in extracurricular school productions. Students will also comprise the production staff and crew for the TVS Performing Arts Complex. They will assume leadership roles within technical theatre, including mentoring Beginning Technical Theatre students.
