Tickets are now available for this year’s Senior Directed One-Act Plays presented by TVS Trojan Theatre. Two current seniors are each trying their hand at directing a short play of their choosing. Rehearsals began several weeks ago and performances will be March 2, 3, and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the TVS Black Box Theater. Tickets are free, but seating is limited, so reservations are recommended.
Senior Tatum Duncan is directing a play entitled Next by Terrance McNally. It opened Off-Broadway in 1969 starring James Coco. The thirty-minute comedy features two characters: a middle-aged, debt-ridden, divorced father of two who has been mistakenly called by the draft; and a no-nonsense female army medic who is assigned to give him his physical. A battle-of-wits is waged between the civilian determined to avoid military service and the career officer just as determined to sign him up. Peter Wolfe (professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis) wrote of the play : "...the line between victim and tormentor blurs...part of the play's merit stems from both the ambiguity of McNally's attitude towards his people and his ironical treatment of them."
Senior Shawn Young is directing the play Perfect Score by Katie Henry. Premiering in 2008, it exams the pressures and excitement involved with high schoolers trying to get into just the right institution of higher learning. Four friends -- a hippie, a jock, a perfectionist, and a slacker -- negotiate the college application process as graduation day rapidly approaches. SATs and GPAs are just a part of their worries, as senioritis, awkward interviews, and the pressure to succeed provide even bigger hurdles in the race to the fat-envelope finish line. Eight cast members perform in this 40-minute show.
Designs for both one-acts are being done by members of the Technical Theatre II and IV classes under the supervision of Mr. George Miller. Tatum and Shawn are both currently enrolled in the Theatre Directing class taught by Mr. Gene Sessa.
In other Trojan Theatre news, auditions were held this week for the Neil Simon play Rumors. Performances of that show are scheduled for April 26-29 in the TVS Black Box Theatre.
